I don’t think we have ever had a happier-looking model than Maye Musk, who appears in our “White Noise” story (page 158). It is probably no coincidence that she is also one of the oldest models to ever appear in our main photo spread. Musk is bursting with life and vigour, and when you learn her backstory in “Contributors” (page 40), it’s evident why.

Musk is just one of the women in our Age Issue who consider growing older as something to aspire to, rather than fear. That’s because today, women of all ages are taking control of their destiny by caring for themselves—from the inside and out.

Of course there is always room for improvement, as the doctors in “Test of Time(page 98) noted after assessing the beauty regimens and lifestyles of real-life ladies spanning five decades.

We always have fun involving our readers in stories, especially when it’s a piece like “Talking Shop” (page 142), in which a roundtable of fashion lovers dish on the latest looks for spring. We eavesdropped while they debated designer denim, chunky heels, banana prints and colour-blocking. But what really shines through in their conversation is how assured each of these women is in her individual approach to trends.

While we are constantly reminded of the downsides of growing older, the upsides go unsung. If all goes right, we have confidence, satisfaction, knowledge and wisdom to look forward to on the road ahead.

And isn’t that something to smile about? Let me know what you think of the Age Issue at letters@fashionmagazine.com.

Bernadette
