Meghan Markle Wore Canadian Jewellery Brand Vargas Goteo For Her Latest Outing
Late last week, Meghan Markle made her most recent public outing to host a panel for the One Young World summit at Windsor Castle. Joined by Prince Harry (who was a surprise guest) for the occasion, the Duchess of Sussex shone in a burgundy block-hued ensemble made up of a Joseph sweater, Boss skirt and Sarah Flint pumps. And whilst the look had already made it to our favourites list, there’s yet another reason to love it – the jewellery Meghan chose to complement the outfit that day was from Canadian brand Vargas Goteo.
Created by Alex Prijic Smith in 2010 in Montreal, Vargas Goteo’s mission is to create beautiful jewellery pieces that highlight the message of animal conservation. Speaking with FASHION, Smith explained further saying, “When I started designing I found myself gravitating towards aesthetics that went beyond trends, and really it comes down to natural beauty all around us. After partnering with WildAid in 2016 for the Ivory Free collection I wanted to consistently keep Vargas Goteo aligned with wildlife conservation. Now through the Manta collection, one of my firsts, we support the Manta Trust, the Zululand Rhino Orphange through the Rhino collection and have since done work with The Ocean Agency with the Reef collection. Designing a luxury item quickly turned to using skills and inspiration to highlight the value of these poached species.”
All of Smith’s designs are handmade, and made-to-order out of her Montreal workshop. Furthermore, all materials are sustainably sourced and all packaging is eco-friendly and recyclable.
For the panel, Meghan wore the brand’s Bow Knot Ring and its Manta Kiss Stack Ring. For each piece sold of the latter, a portion of the sale is donated to the Manta Trust. As for what it means to have the Duchess choose to support the brand, the designer says, “I couldn’t be happier! After starting Vargas Goteo almost 10 years ago, I’m so proud that with gained visibility, comes increased support of the conservation organizations we support through sales. I think its apparent when eco/socio awareness run deep, and Meghan is a shining example of that. Whether in her actions, her words, or her choice of brands, she stays true to shining a light on the value of compassion and efforts made to create positive change.”
As with any piece Meghan chooses to wear, all eyes are now on the Montreal-based brand. We ask what Smith hopes people will learn about Vargas Goteo in the process, to which she answers, “That we can use our voices, whatever talents/skill sets, really anything that moves us, to bring light to causes and create change.”
