Melania Trump is Reportedly Wearing This Designer Label to the Inauguration
With the US Presidential Inauguration just a few days away, it’s time to talk dresses. Quick refresher: President-elect Trump addressed this topic himself a few weeks ago when he spoke to the press in response to Meryl Streep’s acceptance speech at the recent Golden Globe Awards. “We are going to have an unbelievable, perhaps record-setting turnout for the inauguration, and there will be plenty of movie and entertainment stars,” Trump told The New York Times. “All the dress shops are sold out in Washington. It’s hard to find a great dress for this inauguration.” Huh. And here we thought only the President-elect’s wife, Melania, was having a hard time rustling up a gown for the big day. For several months now, designers like Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford have been vocal about NOT wanting to dress the future First Lady. Sophie Theallet vowed to never work with her and even urged other designers to follow suit in an open letter she posted on her Twitter account.

On the other hand, several prominent American designers have said they’d be interested in dressing Mrs. Trump. In a recent WWD article, Carolina Herrera said it would be “an honor,” Tommy Hilfiger said “any designer should be proud to dress her” and Diane von Furstenberg said “Melania deserves the respect of any first lady before her.”
As the days creep toward Friday’s events, it’s now rumoured that Ralph Lauren and his team are working on an Inauguration Day outfit and gown for the Slovenian-born former model. Lauren is also reportedly creating custom pieces for other members of the Trump family (hello, Ivanka). Interestingly, this label took the spotlight on numerous occasions on the campaign trail—for both parties. Melania wore a Ralph Lauren white one-shouldered jumpsuit (which she bought at the designer’s Madison Avenue flagship) for her husband’s acceptance speech on election night, while Hillary Clinton wore a Ralph Lauren white tailored suit at the final presidential debate. (Lauren has been a public supporter of Clinton.) Clearly, when it comes to power dressing, white is the new red.
But back to the big question: What will Melania wear to the Inauguration this Friday? At the swearing-in ceremony, at the ball—everything! Judging by the sartorial choices that the future first lady wore on the campaign trail, she might opt for a minimalist column silhouette in a neutral (white, cream) or a bright solid colour like red or fuchsia. We’ve rounded up four of Melania Trump’s signature looks during the campaign. Check out the gallery below and let the guessing begin!
