The who’s who of the fashion world blessed our Instagram feeds last night by stepping out at the Met Gala in their (stylists’) best interpretations of a very tricky theme, China: Through the Looking Glass.
Some of our favourites were the ones who took this year’s fashion focus and elevated it to something unexpected. Our favourite icons looked to the East and interpreted the theme with a nod to a culture that has long influenced Western ways of life in fashion, food, spirituality and more.
Jennifer Lawrence was the Gala’s honorary celebrity co-chair and stunned in a couture gown by Dior. It was no shock that the two-time Oscar winner and face of Dior would be wearing a design by the French fashion house, and she nailed this year’s theme. As if we had any doubt. She walked the 150-yard red carpet beside her co-chair, Anna Wintour, who wore a beautiful vintage Chanel gown.
Beyoncé wore a jaw-dropping, skin-baring, internet-breaking Givenchy gown (for the fourth year in a row). She has long called on designer Ricardo Tisci to keep her at the top of Met Gala best-dressed lists and this year was no exception.
Kim Kardashian was one of the big names to watch tonight as she revealed early Monday morning that she would be wearing Peter Dundas. Dundas recently returned to Roberto Cavalli and last night, Kim wore his first design for the house since his return. How’s that for a warm homecoming?
It should come as no surprise that the supermodel attendees were some of the leaders in best understanding the Met Gala 2015 theme. Cara Delevingne has always expertly interpreted the fashion direction of the evening by ensuring her own style shines through and last night she did just that, showing up covered in (temporary) ink—beautiful plum blossom tattoos. Naomi Campbell wore a Burberry floor-length beaded gown with an ever-plunging neckline. And of course, Kendall Jenner was the model to watch. Wearing a slinky green Calvin Klein dress with major cutouts, it was a stunning understanding of what the Met Gala theme (the shade was likely a nod to Chinese jade).
Despite all the fashion risks taken last night, there were a few serious missteps. In fact, the only real disappointments came from stars who played it too safe. The winner of the evening? Rihanna of course, in a massive yellow couture gown (cape?) by Guo Pei that took two years (!) to make, complete with a matching headpiece. All hail the queen.
