MFW diary: Arrivederci Milano!

The Linate airport is looking like one chic departure lounge early this morning. Grabbing a coffee before jetting off to Paris is: Style.com‘s Nicole Phelps, the Los Angeles Times’ Booth Moore, WWD‘s Miles Socha. Plus, there’s a whole gaggle of seriously chic NYC cool girls who I’m always sitting next to at shows that (even at my age) have a way of making me feel like the girl in the high school caf who eats alone. But enough about me, I haven’t had two seconds to tell you about the final day of Milan fashion week!

I’m always so proud when DSquared2‘s Dean and Dan Caten nail it and that’s exactly what they did at yesterday’s show. I’ve known the twins since their early days in Toronto and never miss a chance to see their creations. Those two can work a theme and a show-tune like nobody’s business⎯I love to sing along! Yesterday’s show winked at the wild and woolly west⎯full of True Grit and pioneer spirit. On a snow covered mountain set (complete with stage coach) the DSquared2 girls looked particularly glossy and gorgeous, ten-gallon hats and all. Kudos to the models⎯it can’t be easy to walk the runway in stiletto granny boots on ice-skate blades. Fox and racoon furs were hits, as were floor length, full-skirted leather coats, long flannel skirts and the duo’s signature sexy denim.

Moving on, Giorgio Armani closed out the week with a particularly strong show complete with Tina Turner perched front row. After a brief video plug for his water conservation project, Aqua for Life, Mr. Armani showed a pretty pastel palette (something of a trend this week) with signature dresses and jackets over pants (cropped and cuffed), feathery furs and a strong finale of shiny embellished silver and pastel evening wear.

Finally, I never close out the week without a final visit to the Marni showroom for one last loving look at Consuela Castaglioni‘s terrific collection. Her technical fabrics with their mix of geometric patterns and jewel and sequin embellishments never fail to inspire me. That, and a final bowl of spaghetti rosa will surely sustain me till next season… ciao for now!
