Last week, designer Michael Kors used his influence to fight the global hunger crisis on official World Hunger Day (October 16). Together with the World Food Programme, the day began with a cleverly orchestrated digital takeover of the billboards at Times Square, which streamed content that raised awareness of his Watch Hunger Stop campaign. The initiative encouraged the world to participate by spreading the word through social media, donating to the cause and purchasing a Kors-designed watch whose sale would fund 100 meals through the World Food Programme.
The designer has also been a huge advocate for God’s Love We Deliver; an organization that prepares tailored meals for people with severe illnesses in the city he calls home. Last year, a $5 million donation he made helped in the renovation of the organization’s facility, which in recognition was re-named to “The Michael Kors Building.” God’s Love We Deliver held its annual Golden Heart Awards to cap off World Food Day with stars from film, fashion, and political circles coming together to celebrate notable community contributions.
With Michael Kors’ name attached to such a worthy cause, the long list of attendees dressed in his wares came as no surprise. Honoured with the first ever Michael Kors Award for Outstanding Community Service, Hillary Clinton wore all black in a custom metallic coat and pants pairing by the designer. Anna Wintour, who co-presented the award, was in a custom indigo lace dress and nude heels. Also opting for lace, Hilary Swank wore an azalea embroidered dress completed with a pair of python sandals and clutch both in silver. Jennifer Hudson and Juliana Margulies picked from the Resort 2014 collection. Hudson was in a black gown with a leg baring slit and Margulies in an optic black and white suit and black sandals.
The awards gala, the most successful in its 28-year history, was also attended by style favourites Giovanna Battaglia and Miroslava Duma and models Iman, Doutzen Kroes and Karlie Kloss, who all wore Michael Kors.
