Milan: Jil Sander, Missoni, Burberry, D&G and Cheap & Chic Fall 2009
Two words: Jil Sander. Just a phenomenal collection tonight that makes everything I’ve seen up till now just look like a bunch of “stuff.” Talk about moving fashion forward. Incredibly simple…modern and futuristic, yet classic clothing—hey, if I were nominated, I’d be wearing one of those finale pieces to the Oscars in a heartbeat. Brilliant, moulded, architectural, unadorned, neon tipped and just breathtaking! The entire room was completely spellbound and believe me, this is not an easy crowd to please. Definitely a moment here in Milan this season.
But let me backtrack a little. Have been running around (since arriving yesterday morning) from showroom to shows, high heels clacking on the cobblestones, of course. The weather is stunning!! Spring time!! Food is delish (have already had my favorite spaghetti rosa twice) and basically—I cannot tell a lie—it’s great to be back in Italy!!
Met up with Thakoon (who is teeny tiny) at the Hogan presentation, where we dished about his favorite Canadian ketchup chips. So far, I’ve seen Missoni—a masterful cocooning story of layers upon layers of knits from cobwebs to ribs, cardigans both cropped and long and stunning floor grazing mufflers, all in a gorgeous pale palate. Would love to see what would happen if Rodarte’s Mullleavy sisters hooked up with the Missonis.
Burberry Prorsum offered up a beautifully subdued classic British heritage collection filled with incredible trenches (please sign me up for the toffee suede number), new long-line knits, dark tartans and pleated tweed kilts that swung gently from the hips (and a divine soundtrack that I’ll ask about at my showroom visit in the morning. Definitely one for the iPod!).
D&G
was a madcap Rococo romp with mini crinis, passementerie-trimmed officers’ jackets, bustiers, full cupcake skirts and more tufting, tassels and tapestry prints than World of Interiors magazine. And you’ll need to break out your Bedazzler this season for all the rhinestone trim on denim!Moschino’s Cheap & Chic collection was a full-on ruffle kerfuffle where Prince belted out “You don’t have to be rich to be my girl.” Yes, it’s all been lovely… Well that is until the leg o’ mutton sleeves at Alberta Ferretti.
It’s definitely a quieter season—attendance at the Milan shows is reportedly down 30 per cent—but you’d never know it by the horrendous traffic trying to get from show to show. Tomorrow: 8 shows and just as many showrooms, so gotta rest up! Ciao for now!!
