Montreal: 5 minutes with Rad Hourani

Hourani by Tim Zaragoza

Stylist turned designer Rad Hourani (radhourani.com) has a cult following for his unisex, seasonless clothing, sold at Reborn (231 St-Paul St. W., Suite 100, 514-499-8549, reborn.ws). He recently debuted a fragrance, and is launching a shoe collaboration with Aldo. Although the Montreal expat now commutes between Paris and New York (but manufactures his lines here), he says the universe is his home. It’s true—he’s out of this world.

Describe Ascent, your fragrance.
“All the scents that remind me of my childhood have been mixed to create one scent that represents the way I feel today: baby powder for birth, rose for love, leather for sex, musk for hope, incense for death.”

Where do you find inspiration?
“I love crisp and clean lines. I am preoccupied by the dialogue between form and function. And I’m very interested in architecture—it allows me to focus on the strength of a sharp black line.”

Tell me about your project with Aldo.
“I wanted to design unisex shoes that I could wear any time of the day: the strap sandal, boot/sneaker and transformable sandal/boot. All three styles are limited editions of 200 pairs.”

What’s in store for you in 2011?
“For Rad Hourani collection #6, I designed six garments (three jackets, one dress/top, one pant, one bag) that you can style into 22 looks.”
