Montreal Fashion Week: Peek-a-boo at Coccolily, Paris stripes at Annie 50, and more from day two

A little rain–or rather, a torrential downpour–couldn’t dampen the spirits of the fashion flock on the second day of Montreal Fashion Week. Many a pair of four-inch heels was broken on St-Paul’s slippery cobblestone streets as the stiletto-clad crowd rushed in to catch Coccolily by Naana Tennachie Yankey.

The Ghanaian designer presented a collection centered around peek-a-boo pieces and underwear-as-outerwear: A bold shoulder structured T-shirt paired with high-waisted lace skivvies, bright orange trouser shorts with a cream strapless bra, and plenty of racy cutouts. Put two and two together, and perhaps some double-stick tape, and you’ll have an outfit. Raspberry and crimson two-tone lips added a dash of ’80s to the mix (albeit a dash borrowed from Ungaro Fall 2009).

Annie 50 brought some classic Parisian-inspired stripes, ruffles and bows to the Paris of Canada. Models walked to what sounded like the French answer to “Johnny Angel” in oxford lace-ups with white flowers peeking out en lieu of socks.

Next, Valerie Dumaine encouraged bare legs with up-to-there micro-minis in shades of greys, taupes and creams. Probably best to pair these looks with leggings, which luckily, were in no shortage of at the Second Clothing show. The Montreal-based jeggings aficionados opened with models sprawled down the runway in classic yoga postures, and some serious forward back-bends, all in Second’s signature “yoga jeans.” We saw every look in the denim bag from slouchy to skinny, boyfriend to trouser and the ubiquitous jean-on-jean combo, a.k.a the Canadian tuxedo. Jury’s still out on whether these denim hybrids will ever make it to the yoga studio.
