Naomi Campbell to Receive British Fashion Council’s Fashion Icon Award
Supermodel Naomi Campbell will be given a special honour by the British Fashion Council on December 2nd: the Fashion Icon Award. Campbell, whose career has spanned the past four decades, is a trailblazer in many respects. She was the first black model to appear on the cover of French Vogue in 1988 and has been a strong advocate for diversity throughout her career. “To see more than one woman of colour on a magazine cover is a big deal, but it really shouldn’t be. It’s not a trend,” she once told BBC Newsnight. Currently, Campbell is a contributing editor at British Vogue and most recently appeared in Valentino’s 2019 Haute Couture show. According to Caroline Rush, the Chief Executive of the BFC, “Naomi represents female empowerment, activism and glamour and her voice is used for great impact.” Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this news is that Campbell hasn’t received the honour already. Keren Craig To Exit Marchesa
Keren Craig, the half of Marchesa who is not Harvey Weinstein’s ex-wife — that would be Georgina Chapman — has announced she will be stepping down from the brand she helped co-found 16 years ago. “While I have made the difficult decision to part ways with Marchesa, I have tremendous pride in the company, the team, and the many successes achieved… I am excited to now begin exploring additional creative opportunities and to push my potential as a designer in new directions,” Craig said in a statement. Marchesa has weathered a difficult 20 months after allegations of sexual misconduct against Harvey Weinstein were reported in both the New York Timesand The New Yorker. Allegedly, Weinstein bullied a number of actresses into wearing Marchesa on the red carpet. Despite Craig’s departure, Marchesa is still on track to present a Spring 2020 collection in September. WWD reports the collection will be preview by appointment only. (WWD)
Former Editor of W Magazine is Suing Condé Nast for $1 Million
Stefano Tonchi, the editor-in-chief of W magazine since 2010, is suing his former employer, claiming wrongful termination. According to Tonchi, he was fired by the company “for cause,” meaning the company would not have to pay him severance, one hour before news broke that the publisher signed a deal to sell the magazine to Surface Media. It has been reported that Tonchi’s salary was “in excess” of $800,000/year and he is suing for $950,000 in damages, as well as $130,000 in interest for a total of $1.08 million. “Mr. Tonchi’s suit is patently false — Condé Nast has a long track record of honouring all our obligations and more. We look forward to defending the case in court,” a spokesperson for the publisher told the New York Post. (The Cut)
