When the art world and the fashion industry collide, you can expect nothing short of greatness, especially when it involves our favourite one-stop shop for luxury fashion, Net-A-Porter.

Working together with chief curator of contemporary art at New York’ National Arts Club, Stacy Engman, the e-commerce site is bringing art and fashion together for a made-to-order collection called the Art Capsul project. Coming from different art genres, the project features five worldwide known artists: Marina Abramovic, George Condo, Vik Muniz, Mickalene Thomas and Canada’s very own, Terence Koh.

Engman told WWD, “It is the first time this has ever been done. I’ve asked artists to conceive of garments that reference their artwork [and] that is entirely by them…there is no pairing with a fashion designer.”

The wearable art collection was exhibited last Wednesday at Paris’s Palais de Tokyo Museum during Couture Week.

While according to WWD, none of the artists had any experience in creating clothes, with each artist experimenting for the one-off collaboration. Essentially, each of these pieces “… becomes an extension of my art performance practice, in a way,” said artist, Marina Abramovíc.

Abramovíc, who most recently made waves with an installation and performance during Toronto’s Luminato Arts Festival, named her seven different coloured jumpsuits Energy Clothes, with each suit representing a day of the week while linking to a celestial body. Each outfit features a small magnet, which pinpoints spots on the body that boost energy.

While George Condo’s parka-baby-doll dress held together by 24-karat gold staples referenced the staples used on his stretch canvases, Terence Koh’s 20,000 hand-sewn faux pearls on his “Pearl Bomber Jacket” may have alluded to his short video clip titled 88 Pearls, which featured Lady Gaga.

Available through Net-A-Porter’s personal shopping service, fashion director of Net-a-porter’s Hollie Rogers announced the bespoke collection will be priced in-line with the individual artists’ market rate in the art world. Seems like only the fashion elites will be the only ones who can afford to get their hands on these one-of-a-kind designs.
