Netflix Sends Powerful Message With She’s Gotta Have It Campaign
First: if you haven’t jumped on the She’s Gotta Have It bandwagon, you are certainly missing out. Second: if we haven’t convinced you yet, the following *spoiler alert* will probably prompt you to binge all 10-episodes. By now, you should be aware that the series is a reboot of Spike Lee’s original 1986 film, a movie about a self-identifying “sex-positive, polyamorous pansexual” who’s finding herself, following her dreams, and juggling relationships three men. In true conscious Spike Lee joints (cc: Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X and Chi-Raq), the writer and director wasted no time to start an important conversation.
In the first episode of the Brooklyn-based series, Nola Darling, played by DeWanda Wise, is walking home late a night when a man calls out to her: “Ayo Ma!” Darling is verbally harassed, and after ignoring his aggressive advances she is physically assaulted–leading the carefree, sexually liberated artist to suffers serious trauma for through to the final episode.
It is hard to believe that these situations are still occurring in 2017, but this is a reality of many women. In solidarity of Darling’s art campaign to raise awareness of the harassment women in Brooklyn face, Netflix is giving women a space to share their catcalling experiences with their social media campaign “#MyNameIsnt”.
