Just before New York Fashion Week, Pantone released its forecast for Fall 2014, citing “Radiant Orchid,” “Mauve Mist” and “Aurora Red” as some of the top hits. Well, yup. From ball gowns to the avant-garde, designers have kept their hues in check this season, using a pretty strikingly clear palette from which to create. Here are some of the standouts, Pantone-approved or otherwise:
Tangerine
Used by: Narciso Rodriguez on structural cocoon coats, MM6 Maison Martin Margiela on chunky knits and metalicized leather shorts, Rag & Bone on slouchy wellie stompers, Rodarte on a glittered deconstructed parka, Victoria Beckham on a structured wrap dress and J.Crew on a vibrant streamlined coat layered over a jersey blouse.
Magenta/Pantone’s Radiant Orchid
Used by: Altuzarra on a plaid mink coat and on vibrant trim, 3.1 Phillip Lim on a paneled fur coat and plush vest and Alexander Wang on heat-activated laser cut leather.
Red/Pantone’s Aurora Red
Used by: Prabal Gurung on tangerine-lined capes and coats, Marc by Marc Jacobs (now MBMJ) on blocked shirt panels, sporty high tops and plaid layers and Tory Burch on Medieval-riffed embroidery,
Cobalt/Pantone’s Royal Blue
Used by: Oscar de la Renta in pops on fur bombers and a boucle jacquard weave paneled skirt, Altuzarra on wide-lapelled wrap coats, Opening Ceremony on open palm printed blouses and skirts and Suno on a multi-layer stripe gypsy dress.
Black
Used by: Oscar De La Renta on an unexpected leather trench, Diesel Black Gold on metal-studded sixties swing dresses, Cushnie et Ochs on cleavage baring bustier dresses, Vera Wang on grungy gossamer layers and Donna Karan on almost everything, from waist-cinched wide lapel jackets and chiffon goddess gowns.
