New York: Opening weekend

By Tammy Eckenswiller

For me, Fashion Week kicked off with BCBG Max Azria: Nice, fluffy jumpsuits and sexy dresses with a decidedly ’90s minimalist vibe served to confuse me as  I tried to sport some of my hot new fall purchases while sweating profusely in the muggy NY heat! I hate to look at spring collections when it’s so damn hot. It just doesn’t make sense. It needs to be cold so I have something to look forward to!

Rag & Bones‘s androgynous collection was a bit more settling with more seasonless punk pieces like one-shoulder dresses, leather vests and metallic blazers. Charlize Theron caused a Locamotion when she showed up in tight black leather pants.

It girl Erin Wasson showed her debut collection for RVCA which featured sexy, scruffy, denim, T-shirts and mini dresses for LES scenesters and those who can’t quite afford Alexander Wang. Speaking of which, Wang’s collection has evolved: he infused sporty elements like sweat pants and pastel colours while still maintaining his grunge-girl roots.

DKNY celebrated 20 years with this spring 2009 collection and there was a bottle of champagne on every seat. I stubbornly dragged mine around to the Gap event and the following shows. My tenacity for freebies will wear off in a few days, trust me. DKNY was the usual fun, bright, short and sporty fare. She closed the show with a montage of previous collections and I squealed when I saw a neoprene jumper dress I bought back in the day. Where the heck is that anyway? Emerging trends: jumpsuits, bloomers, sporty and boyfriend blazers. Winona Ryder, Christina Ricci and Nicole Richie sat front row looking cute.

Hervé Léger by Max Azria looked fresher this season, with bands running in all directions creating the expected sexy, tight frocks. the big news was the swim suit collection that closed the show, hot but ill fitting on super skinny girls.

Diane von Furstenberg was exciting because J.Lo showed up and we all craned our necks to take a peek. Same glowy skin and perfect hair, she hasn’t let it slip a bit! The collection was mostly, frothy chiffon dresses in quiet prints and each model wore a strange flower/feather headress that seemed out of place somehow, but when Diane takes her stroll down the runway to ‘I’m Coming Out ” by Diana Ross you have to love her!

The weekend ended with Miss Sixty and an amazing soundtrack (Deanna from Sixty Canada has promised to provide us with the play list ASAP!). The collection was fun; baggy trousers were my fave. And Bijou Phillips obnoxiously bouncing in her seat to every song and waving hello to Stam on the runway while Blake Lively peered at her like she sprouted another head. Ahh…I love my job!

UPDATE Here’s the playlist from Deanna at Miss Sixty: Annie, “Danny Danny”; CSS, “Jager Yoga”; Santogold, “You’ll Find A Way”; The Ettes, “Marathon”; The Ting Tings, “Great DJ” and Annie, “I Can’t Let Go.”
