Ones to watch: Heaven Tanudiredja’s baubles are well, heavenly

For those in fashion, Antwerp is immediately associated with the Antwerp Six⎯a group of avant garde designers who graduated from the super-prestigious Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts during the early ’80s (Dries van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester and Walter Van Beirendonck to name a few). Since then, Antwerp has become a breeding ground for innovative design⎯and jewellery designer Heaven Tanudiredja is no exception.

Tanudiredja got his start at the same school as these avant-garde greats, and was later commissioned by both Dior and van Noten following his graduation to create pieces for their collections. No one would ever accuse the designer of being subtle or understated⎯his pieces are bursts of stunningly colourful crystals and jewels that often (literally) swallow up the entire chest or wrist of those wearing them.

Scouring antique stores for artifacts to incorporate or draw from, age-old inspiration allows him to create pieces that seem at once distinctly futuristic while calling to mind historic references from all over. Not only are his pieces visually incredible, they’re executed with the highest level of craftsmanship, with one piece sometimes spanning over 48 hours to perfect.

It goes without saying that no one crafts a statement baubles quite like Tanudiredja. Somehow, we get the feeling your chunky gold cuffs and oversized pearls don’t seem so bold anymore…

Heaven is available at Holt Renfrew.
