From side-parted curls to cropped cuts, hair at the 2013 Oscars played it safe—but with maximum results. Dare we say there was not a single bad hairstyle at last night’s award show? Three leading ladies—Jennifer Lawrence, Naomi Watts and Amanda Seyfriend—wore their blonde hair in similar styles on the Oscars red carpet: pulled into a low chignon with volume at the crown. This romantic look was more about loose texture than showing a sleek style, and considering that all three women have a bit of a natural wave to their hair it was a smart move by their hairstylists. When it comes to marathon events like the Academy Awards (which, from prep to afterparty can last for more than 15 hours) it’s always wise to choose a style that works with your natural hair texture—there’s simply too much time for anything else to fall flat or frizz out.
Which could be what Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Hudson were going for with their simple, straight styles. Aniston’s hair was no surprise—we’re honestly unsure when we last saw her without this simple, no-fuss style. (However considering the middle part is her signature style you think she’d have flyaway taming down pat by now…) Jennifer Hudson’s straight hair was for the red carpet only, as she added curl before performing “And I’m Telling You” during the performance. Meanwhile, Sandra Bullock added interest to her sleek style with a sparkly barrette that was tucked behind her ear. It may have prompted some jokes about cellphone earpieces throughout the night but we’re on board with the look.
But the best hair of the 2013 Oscars has to go to Charlize Theron. Did any woman watching not consider, even for a moment, that she too should cut off all her hair? While the news that had Charlize shaved her head for a film made headlines back in November, last night’s buzz was all about how good she looks with a buzz cut. Charlize Theron’s hair also proved that sometimes a little growth makes your colour better—by letting just a bit of her roots show the style had added dimension and texture.
Also rounding out the short hair trend was Anne Hathaway, whose hair was side-swept into a mod style with focus on a heavy fringe. While Anne has said she loves her short hair, it seems to be growing out quickly and we’re curious to see how long it lasts before she, well, goes long again.
And speaking of long hair, let’s take a moment to appreciate Jessica Chastain’s auburn locks. Side-parted waves are her go-to style for a reason: it’s a look that’s incredible flattering as well as on trend. Both Reese Witherspoon and Kristen Stewart had similar looks, but on either ends of the style spectrum: Reese’s voluminous curls were almost lacquered into place while Kristen opted for gritty, hand-tousled beach waves. However you choose to style it, the side-part will continue to be a strong red carpet contender well into next year’s award season.
