Rachel Zoe hit Toronto yesterday for the launch of her new collection. We’ve got the Q&A!
Style dynamo Rachel Zoe hit Holt Renfrew in Toronto yesterday for the launch of her eponymous new fashion line. As you’d expect, a swelling crowd of “bananas”-crazed fans flooded the store, waiting for the chance to meet and greet their maker (we overheard lots and lots of “die”s in the crowd… just saying). Pre-mayhem, we sat down with the Zoe Report for a little Q&A about what makes her tick. Baby Skyler included.
How’s it going so far?
Good! A little tired.
Tired must be your middle name. Today is one example of your usual multi-tasking. You do everything—how do you manage?
You don’t really have a choice; you just have to manage. It’s the only way I’ve known how to work for the last 15 years. And now I add motherhood to that, and it’s triple duty! But I have an extraordinary team that works with me that really helps do a lot, you know, before I have to jump in there. I have an incredible support team that enables me to be the most efficient that I possibly can all the time. And I use my time really wisely.
You’ve also got a good sense of humour, so I think that probably helps, right?
You have to laugh your way through life. I believe that laughing and being self-deprecating and doing all that, poking fun at yourself, and having a good humour about things probably gets you through life, you know?
So, how did this collection happen? I know you sort of dabbled with QVC first, but this is your first real foray into having your own line.
Yeah! I think that I started to really itch; I just said, “I have to do this. I have to start to really, like, say what I want to say in this business and really make clothes that I want to wear every day that are affordable and beautiful and luxurious and exciting and interesting.” And that’s kind of how it all happened. Now it just became a reality, which is amazing.
You’ve got a good in because you’ve worked with clothes for so long and you know how they’re supposed to fit.
I just really want it to be that perfect kind of crossover of fantasy and reality. And sort of that fantasy where you say, “Oh, I’ve always wanted an incredible military jacket” or “I’ve wanted a fur coat,” and then just make an incredible faux-fur coat that’s very affordable and very wearable. And bring it to the place where everyone can really access it and relate to it and just wear it and love it and not feel that it’s so precious: “Oh, my god, I can’t wear it. I have to keep it in plastic and on a hanger and can’t wear it unless it’s a holiday.” So that’s sort of the intention.
Do you have a favourite piece?
Too many. I’m going to say the sequined cardigan—definitely one of my favourites. We did it in white and did it in black. And this camel suit with this pant here, which is one of my favourites.
The shoes are great too. Obviously a crazy heel is a must?
The shoes are awesome. I love them.
