For the Rodarte Spring 2014 collection, the Mulleavy sisters reflected upon their own past. Their collection was inspired by their shared childhood in Los Angeles and models were decked out in looks fit for any wild child of the ’80s. Makeup artist James Kaliardos, working with Nars, created a look that played upon the graphic aesthetic of Hollywood circa 1980. He sculpted the models’ features with matte bronzers and made their eyes pop with a sharp black and white cat eye shape. It’s a totally wearable look for spring and easy for even makeup beginners to do.

Start by prepping your skin with a primer, then applying a medium coverage foundation with your fingers. The warmth of your hands will help melt it into your skin, giving it a more natural appearance.
While your foundation sets, use a clear mascara or brow gel to comb your brows upwards. At this time, you can also apply prep your lips by applying a moisturizing lip balm.

To sculpt your face, take a matte finish bronzer and buff it under your cheekbones, blending outwards and upwards on an angle towards your ears. Yes, this application is very ’80s, but that’s part of what makes this look!
Apply an eyeshadow primer to your lids, then press a white eyeshadow onto your entire lid, concentrating the heaviest application on the inner corners. Apply a little bit on the inner corners of your bottom lashline as well.

Using an angled brush, apply a black gel or cream eyeliner to your upper lashline. Apply from the outer corner inwards, tapering the line as you move inwards. Once that line is nice and neat, go back to the outer corner and add a cat-eye flick on each eye. To get the correct angle, the flick should point towards the end of your eyebrow. Now add a small amount of black liner on the bottom lashline as well, extending it about a third of the way inwards.
For a more dramatic version of this look, line your waterlines with a long-lasting white eyeliner. Finish the eyes by applying a few generous coats of mascara. For extra drama, add a few individual false lashes at the outer corners of the eyes.

To complete the look, wipe off your lip balm and press a bit of foundation or concealer onto your lips to matte them out. This part of the look tends to work best on ladies with darker complexions. If you’re very fair, however, I suggest applying a bit of gloss over the foundation to give your lips a bit of dimension.
That’s it! You’re done and ready to rock out in Los Angeles.
