When Gucci sent models down the runway at its Spring 2014 show in a mix of warm jewel tones, makeup artist Pat McGrath answered the call with a metallic smoky eye in analogous shades. The collection was inspired by the unexpected cocktail of luxe sportswear and the swirling Art Nouveau illustrations of artist Erté. Bright basketball shorts and black mesh t-shirts were followed by embroidered chiffon gowns and the makeup look—quite remarkably—complemented the wide variation in looks beautifully.

The base of this look lies a gently contoured cheek and a strong brow. Once your foundation is set, buff a matte bronzer under the cheekbones, swirling towards the ears. For a more subtle variation, take a page from McGrath’s playbook and use a deeper coloured foundation (maybe your summer shade) instead of bronzer to contour. The key with either product is to blend really thoroughly.

To mimic the Gucci brow, fill in your own with an eyebrow pencil and make a point of filling in the area below your arch to flatten the shape a bit. McGrath suggests that a flatter brow creates a more carefree, athletic look.
Prep your eyes with an eyeshadow primer, then apply a warm brown across the entire mobile eyelid, stopping at about the crease. Use your brush to create a soft “V” shape at the outer corners of the eyes. Blend so there are no harsh lines.

Using your finger, press on a metallic copper or rust eyeshadow onto the centre of your mobile eyelid, concentrating your application at the very centre. Don’t blend it, as that would diffuse the colour and you want it to remain intense.

Using a small, pointed brush, apply an intense metallic gold eyeshadow to the inner corner of the eye, on both the top and bottom lashline.

Finish the look by curling your lashes and applying a brown mascara. Coat your lips with a clear balm if your skin is tan to deep in complexion, or apply a champagne-coloured gloss if you’re fair.
