Serena Williams’ Stylist Shares the Secrets Behind the Tennis Star’s Gorgeous Maternity Style
Ever since Serena Williams unintentionally revealed her baby bump on Snapchat in April, the 35-year-old tennis star has been acing maternity style.
Williams’ first red carpet appearance since her pregnancy announcement was at the Met Gala on May 1, and she nailed it in a custom emerald green Atelier Versace gown.
Her longtime stylist Kesha McLeod said the evening was a major fashion moment for Williams.
“Versace sketched the dress, based on Serena’s thoughts—she definitely had a lot of input into what she was wearing, McLeod tells Refinery29. “Designers are not just designing a dress for her as a celebrity; the focus is now on showing that baby bump. Women usually throw on big, oversized dresses or a caftan. As Serena’s Met Gala dress showed, you can still wear a full-on gown, with a long train.”
Vogue captured a fun Cinderella moment of Williams dancing and twirling in a video from the Instagram booth at this year’s Met Gala.
Basic pieces like tees and pencil skirts are still among Williams’ go-to staples for meetings and casual days. But McLeod adds a statement topper, like “a Burberry trench with the sleeves rolled up” to kick things up a notch. “She’s still going to be, and look like, Serena Williams, and she’s still in regular pieces all day long that accentuate her baby bump,” she tells Refinery29. This past weekend, the expectant tennis star brought the glam at pal Beyoncé’s baby shower.
When it comes to swimwear, Williams has a closet full of sexy styles that she continues to werk. At this stage, only her tops are a different size. “The suit she wore for her reveal, it was a regular, non-maternity swimsuit that she already had pre-pregnancy, McLeod tells Refinery29.
What will Serena grab the spotlight in next? An off-the-shoulder top? A trench coat-worn-as-a-dress? A sexy one-piece swimsuit?
Her stylist is dreaming up looks that show off this star athlete’s changing bod, focusing on her back, shoulders and legs. “Her muscles are sculpted differently because she’s not playing currently,” McLead tells Refinery29. “It’s like I’m dressing a whole new physique; a whole new body. It’s fun!”
