The first show of World MasterCard fashion week will be one to remember for designer Sid Neigum. Shortly after his 6pm, show the designer was awarded the Mercedes-Benz Start Up award, which includes a $30,000 bursary as well as a mentorship from a panel of Canadian fashion experts.
Guests were welcomed into the show space by an eerie, windblown track. The lightness of the music made way for the voluminous but incredibly light-looking collection. Working with a palette of white, cream, grey and black, Neigum created a modern collection with his signature draping and fabric manipulation. Laser-cut slashes created peekaboo patterns on dresses and skirts, and asymmetrical hemlines were a staple, as were obi-style belts that were used to closed relaxed draped vests. The standout pieces of the collection were modular origami-inspired pieces. Structured, with laser-cut squares fastened together creating Frank Gehry-like garments. Truly architecture for the body, some pieces included handmade metal staples designed for the collection.
Models had their hair tucked in and brushed back as they walk down the runway to the dreamy sounds of a live harpist. While models floated down the runway, Sid Neigum should be on cloud nine after a impressive show and exciting accomplishment.
