Snapped by Tommy Ton: “It was definitely one of the highlights of my week”
Canadian wonder boy Tommy Ton reflects on his street style photographs in a new monthly column.
“I always make the trek to the J.Crew presentation in New York, because there’s a whole mix of people coming to the show. I especially love seeing people who work for the companies—whether it’s J.Crew or Stella or another label, it’s inspiring to see their take on the brand. So when I saw these three together after the presentation, it was one of those moments when you’re like, ‘Oh my God, where did they come from?’ It was definitely one of the highlights of my week in terms of pictures. I just love that it taps into so many different trends, like the whole military look, the True Grit thing, statement pants, colour-blocking, layering… it’s a lot, but it’s just so very cool. And I think that’s what J.Crew really prides itself on, that mix. It’s not about wearing one brand head to toe. They want you to be able to incorporate it into your wardrobe as well as these girls have. In a way, it’s everything you would and wouldn’t expect from New York street style. People have this idea that in New York, especially at fashion week, you need to look perfectly done with high heels and an It bag. But then in New York you always expect the unexpected. That’s the whole point: You want to be inspired.”
