Snapped by Tommy Ton: “This is one of my favourite looks ever”
Canadian wonder boy Tommy Ton reflects on his street style photographs in a new monthly column.
I’ve always thought this was one of the best outfits I’ve ever seen. I just love how simple it is. Fashion people are always pulling out the big guns and trying to outdo each other. Sometimes when you see people dressed up for shows, you wonder, ‘When would I ever wear that?’ That’s why this is one of my favourite looks ever. It’s nice to see someone going to all the shows wearing something so basic that looks so good. I often compare the Tuileries to the Serengeti, and Susan was like this gazelle tiptoeing through the gardens being photographed by everyone. I’ve actually captured her in this same outfit before, but with a slightly different shoe or a sweater underneath the blazer. She pulls it out maybe once or twice a season, and I’m sure she’ll wear it again. I love when people like to wear their clothes as opposed to feeling the need to buy new clothes every season. She reminds me very much of Sofia Coppola—nothing ever screams of a particular trend. And it’s funny, because she’s a New Yorker but there are elements of how she dresses that are very Parisian. French girls always wear the same thing, but there’s a certain ease in how they wear it that makes them so alluring. Those are the looks I really gravitate toward.
