Spooky beginnings
When the re-configured team behind the once-a-year Fashion Cares soiree decided to move the event from May to November, we were a little surprised. It all made sense however when the theme of the evening was revealed and Fashion sCares was born.
Held the night after Halloween at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, the 22rd annual fundraiser, hosted by Toronto native and Elton John hubby David Furnish, saw a slew of talent hit the stage, including Katy Perry, FASHION cover girl Kreesha Turner and Dame Shirley Bassey, who entertained the crowd between Hitchcock heroine-themed runway segments. Between songs, Fritz Helder & the Phantoms held the costume contest, which was won by FASHION staffer Vicky Shaughnessy and hairstylist Bill Angst.
As always, the night was a who’s who of the Toronto fashion community: co-host Yasmin Warsame, Jeanne Beker, Zoomer magazine’s Suzanne Boyd and friend Ian Hylton and Fashion Cares chair Michael King and artistic director Phillip Ing all gave good face. To add to the party mix, actors Natalie Brown and Lauren Holly mingled with MTV’s Dan and Jessi, Breakfast Television’s Dina Pugliese, Tracy Moore, the new host of CityLine, and Traci Melchor and Tim Deegan from MuchMoreMusic and MuchMusic respectively. While there are clearly some kinks to be worked out (we’re thinking bartenders who are a little more easy on the eyes and more fun booths à la the “blood splattered” photo stand), seems like the revamped Fashion Cares will keep the fundraising momentum going for years to come.
