Spring 2017 Trend Report: From Supersize to Mini, the Hottest Bags to Carry Now
Alexa, Cara, Drew—when it comes to Hollywood star wattage, you know you’ve truly made it when there’s a bag named after you. But even if Michael Kors or Marc Jacobs aren’t stamping your moniker on their latest bags, you can still shine this spring with the bounty of new It bags.
Extremes reign supreme, with supersize and micro mini taking the spotlight this season. If you love a bag that fits your life, then the new everything-but-the-kitchen-sink styles should be on your spring wish list. Lemaire’s arty shoulder bags, featuring beadwork straight out of the 70s, are perfect for casual weekends on-the-go. An oversized bag with ultra skinny straps is the accessory du jour at Celine, and we have to admit we’re kind of obsessed with the muted mustard hue. Even clutch bags are supersized this season, and standouts include Loewe’s slouchy power clutch with enough room to fit a laptop.
Big and bright was the name of the game at Balenciaga, where a round cherry red zippered bag, resembling a bean bag chair, injected a happy, pop of colour. At Stella McCartney, a bag featuring a rich chocolate hue and gold hardware melted our hearts. This is the stuff of sartorial dreams—it’s seasonless and stylish in a look-at-me-I’m-luxe kind of way. Marni gave its unstructured cinch bags a sporty spin, thanks to the cool bungee cord ties.
Go big or go home is one message this season, but small and mighty is another. Kim Kardashian got the micro mini memo; she was snapped carrying a mini Hermès Kelly while out with her mom, Kris Jenner, and sister Kourtney in Calabasas, California last week. The mini Kelly is just one of the tiny treasures popping up IRL and on the runways. Of the later, Chloé’s midnight blue change purse-sized bag gets a gold star for its haute hardware, which includes a door knocker-like handle. At Fendi, a doll-size lady bag featuring colourful, crafty embellishment and a fluffy plus-one (a.k.a. a fur bag charm) is the accessory equivalent of a street style star.
Neon pink brought the heat at Alexander Wang, thanks to a tiny bucket bag drenched in this sporty 90s-inspired hue. Attached to the wrist with a matching cuff (is this the new wristlet?) it also features a heavy silver chain, in case you need to up your street cred. A petite lime green cross-body style is the latest lust-have at Valentino, while a tricked-out mini Robot bag (the star of the season) brought a dose of The Jetsons to Chanel’s spring collection.
Check out our favourite spring 2017 bags below—whether you go supersize or micro mini, it’s all about making a bold, fresh statement. And who knows, maybe someday you’ll see your own name splashed across the latest It bag. Until then, there’s always monogramming.
