Spring 2017 Trend Report: How to Wear the Latest Athleisure Looks
You don’t have to be Serena Williams to look like a sporty superstar. This spring’s cool athleisure looks are all about scoring points off the court; think sport-meets-street with a dash of Rihanna. The 29-year-old mega pop star even has her own line, Fenty x Puma, featuring athletic-inspired pieces, like oversized hoodies and anoraks, with serious street cred. RiRi upped the sartorial swagger at her spring 2017 show, topping off her sporty look with a ladylike necklace with Princess Di vibes.
Rihanna wasn’t the only one turning to the gym and street for inspo this season—Alexander Wang hit the pavement, too, with a 90s-inspired line-up, which included colourful cropped windbreakers and leather biking shorts. He also debuted his new collab collection with Adidas Originals, with models walking the finale in black tees, hoodies and tearaway pants.
The anorak jacket ruled at Versace, and one particularly vibrant version (we love the parachute-worthy palette) billowed out like a cape, creating a cool Super Woman effect. At Barbara Bui, a one-shouldered sports bra top was paired with a slouchy jacket and pants that glistened like classic tearaways from the 80s. Tommy Hilfiger stamped his signature collegiate cool on a baseball-style bomber, and J.W. Anderson’s quilted multi-buckled jackets walked the line between fashion and traditional fencing uniforms.
Proportion play was at its best at Sportmax, thanks to an XXL graphic print anorak featuring cords that pulled in at the neck and the waist. Vetements’ updated tracksuit included a lightweight jersey fabric and a strategic cut-out on one shoulder, while MSGM incorporated racing stripes and bold colour into several key looks. There was even a sporty hit of neon on the mesh bucket bags.
Check out our favourite athleisure looks below from the spring 2017 runways, then try working a few of these pieces into your wardrobe. After all, this trend is so much more than a look—it’s a lifestyle.
