Spring beauty 2016: 73 photos of the 10 biggest hair and makeup trends of the season
by FASHION StaffAfter what seems like a hundred seasons of “no makeup” makeup dominating the runways, the Spring 2016 shows brought back something we’d been seriously missing—fun. And colour! If you can believe it, models wore actual makeup. Yes, as in more than just a quick swipe of moisturizer.
So what better way to kick off the 10 biggest trends of the season than with the boldest of the bunch: blue makeup. Your eighth grade staple has grown up. Rather than a frosty hue, at Marc Jacobs and Hugo Boss, the eyeliner was graphic and an electric cobalt. At Missoni and Chanel, more than just a touch of blue was applied to models’ eyes (and more). You’ll see what we mean.
If the clothes on the runways were any indication, the ’90s are still alive and well, and everyone’s favourite decade has made its way above the shoulders. Matte brown shades adorned models’ lips at Burberry and Givenchy (and no, they didn’t use Kylie Lip Kit), while baby bangs popped up at Blumarine and Christopher Kane.
And if you’ve really been craving some excitement, you’ll be happy to know that glitter is back, in many forms. From the subtle gold shadow at Etro, to the glued-on sequins at Giambattista Valli, not only is glitter now appropriate for daytime, but it’s no longer confined to your wardrobe, either. Your face is totally fair game.
When it comes to hair, ponytails have made their way outside of the gym and now regularly show up on the red carpet, and braids—well, if you follow any of the Kardashians on Instagram, you already know that braids are having their moment in the spotlight right now.
And finally, if all of that seems a bit intimidating to you, lover of French beauty and minimalism, fear not, because red lips have endured yet another season.
Here are the top 10 beauty trends of Spring 2016, and the products you need to achieve each look.

BLUE MAKEUP
By the time Chanel models rolled their luggage down the runway in Paris—donning sleep masks the colour of the sky, painted on by makup artist Tom Pecheux—it was already clear that blue was the season’s MVP. Artists left no paint chip behind, employing everything from teal and turquoise to cobalt and cornflower to line eyes, dust lids, tiny lashes and even dress brows.

’90s
Spring’s homage to everyone’s favourite era came by way of micro-bangs, seen at shows like Blumarine and Christopher Kane. At Chloé, it was a stroke of pigment in the waterline, another key beauty trend from that decade. And at Givenchy and Burberry, the ‘90s came through via matte brown lipstick.

Pink lids were a standout look on the runways, in all shades. From pastel at Lanvin and Dior, to hot pink at Giamba and Jill Stuart, rosy tones proved their versatility, this season going from pretty to punk in just a few swipes.

GLITTER
Pat McGrath’s Gold 001 pigment has gotten a lot of play since she created the gilded mouths at Prada. While many resort to begging McGrath for the highly coveted pigment in her Instagram comments (cringe), you can take the high road and recreate the look by brushing on a gold-flecked gloss or repurposing a metallic eyeshadow. Not feeling so bold? Get inspired by Dries Van Noten and Etro, who showcased more subtle ways to wear glitter.

HAIR ACCESSORIES
While some equate tiaras with spray-tanned toddlers and pageant queens, others think of Kate Middleton or Courtney Love in her prime. This spring, the polarizing topper turned up on the runways at Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu, giving accessories a regal touch. But if you’re looking for something more chill, take a cue from DVF and go floral, or keep it simple, like at Mary Katrantzou, with a black ribbon. What’s more chill than that?

PONYTAILS AND BRAIDS
The pony reinvents itself every season. This season, tails were handled in a multitude of varieties: in loose, lazy-Sunday-level knots, split into two (grown up girl pigtails), twisted to resemble rope and tightly braided. With this in mind, it’s clear the humble elastic is having its moment in the spotlight.

BOLD HAIRCUTS
In a season that rebelled against homogenized beauty, many models stood out for their distinctive haircuts from Ruth Bell’s shorn head (originally done for a McQueen campaign) to Peyton Knight’s bowl cut (done by Guido Palau backstage at Alexander Wang). Lineisy Montero’s short Afro was left untouched, proudly showing up in 60 plus shows while Mica Arganaraz’s curly shag is the new cool girl cut.

Lashes went overboard this season, thanks to heavy-handed mascara application and artists’ penchant for false lashes – the stranger, the better. At Marni, Tom Pecheaux described the extreme fringe as lash serum gone awry.

RED LIPS
There is no question that a red lip is an enduring beauty statement. Appearing in New York at DKNY and Oscar de la Renta, it proved to have staying power well into Paris Fashion Week. But at certain shows, instead of an entire army of crimson mouths, only a handful of girls wore it, speaking to the overall theme of individuality rather than adhering to a one-look-fits-all approach.
