Street Style, the high school edition: Toronto’s fashionable students teach us a few things
by Amelia EllisSchool’s out! Well almost. At this moment, teens across the country are cramming for final exams or procrastinating by dreaming about the summer. So before these petri dishes of style depart for a lakeside dock or part-time job at the mall, we took our street style camera to Toronto Northern Secondary School (alumni include actors Jonathan Keltz, Reign, Patrick J. Adams, Suits, O.C. mom Kelly Rowan and fashion designers Dean and Dan of Dsquared to name a few!) Today’s high schooler is connected 24/7, and in constant dialogue via phones that enable them to post, like, or tag. With inspirations that range from Jean Paul Gaultier to Lily-Rose Depp to Raven Symone, these stylish Northerners are as likely to get threads at Hot Topic as she is Aritzia and dads’ closet. From bucket hats and tie-die, to pencil skirts and florals, teens today prove that when it comes to street style at high school, there is no “right” way to dress, just their way to dress.

“The jeggings are Forever21; the tank and plaid are H&M. I’m inspired by my mother and Raven-Symone. They both have a wild and unique style.”

“My skirt is from Costa Blanca, my heels are from Geox, my lunch bag is from Elle, and my shirt is a hand-me-down from my Grandma. I liked how simple each article was, and the subdued colours.”

“The sweater is from Ksubi, I got it on a trip to Australia earlier this year. I loved the uniqueness of the oval stitching. The shorts are from Aritzia, a great staple for summer. I get inspiration from just about anywhere. Sometimes I’ll see an old woman walking down the street and think: ‘I could rock that outfit!”

“I’m wearing a Brandy Melville skirt, Birks and a DIY shirt. My friend and I cut off the sleeves of a shirt (it’s actually a t-shirt that we found in the kids’ section at Target). We found cute designs online and did iron-on transfers.”

“My style has become more of what I wanted it to be. I feel much more confident in what I wear now.”

“One of my biggest inspirations is my mom. I see a lot of her style reflected in mine, which I never thought I would!”

“As long as you are happy with your style it doesn’t really matter what people think.”

“My top is from Marshalls; jeans from American Apparel. I always tell myself that I’m too short for high-waist pants but decided it would be a new experience (a good decision). As for my shirt, I thought it was interesting the way it folded in the front.”

“The top is from Zara, it was a really quick buy. I’m super into patterned things, and the tiny safety pins on the shirt really drew me in. Skirt: Forever 21, I think the color made me buy it. Shoes, Little Burgundy, I was looking for a pair of Adidas for a while.”

“The shirt is my dad’s old one from the early ’90s, it’s really different from anything else I own. The jeans are from Joe Fresh. The jean jacket is my sister’s and the bucket hat is from Urban Outfitters.”

“I bought my shirt and shorts from Brandy Melville. I liked the shirt because it was simple and could be worn with a variety of things. I was really drawn to the shorts because of the paisley pattern on them, and how comfortable they were.”

“I really like rompers because they look fancy yet they’re so effortless to wear, with the exception of going to the bathroom. It looks like a random floral but up close you can see the details of the skulls. The shirt is men’s but I thought the little airplanes were cute. I always wear this shirt on plane rides for good luck.”
