A Muslim who works at Bikini Village– what could be more Canadian than that?

When we asked writer Maryam Siddiqi to talk to women about how they balance fashion and faith (“Feel the Heat,” page 107), little did we know the stories she would uncover.

A Brazilian who moved to Montreal and converted from sleeveless and strings to Orthodox Judaism. An Ontario woman who dons different outfits for her parents, in-laws, husband and friends. Clearly summer, for some, is complicated…far beyond deciding whether your new sandals should be gladiators or platforms.

The other eye-opener in this issue is how much success Canadian designers have had selling swimwear. In “Catch the Wave” (page 54), senior editor Sarah Casselman profiles five brands making a splash on the international scene—led by Montreal’s Shan, which has 125 employees and distribution in more than 25 countries. We’ve also aimed to make your swimsuit shopping smoother with market editor Caitlan Moneta’s roundup of the best new suits (“Bathing Beauties,” page 72) and our Focus guide to the country’s swimwear retailers (page 174).

If celebrities were described by their fashion sense then Kate Hudson would be LA cool. And those are the exact words we would use to describe Hudson’s new capsule collection for Ann Taylor. That’s right; if you’ve been looking to embody Hudson’s free-spirited beachy style, look no more. The exclusive summer 2013 collection will feature a selection of chic white pieces and rose-gold accessories all inspired by Hudson’s love for fashion.

The easy-breezy collection will be available at Ann Taylor stores nationwide on Wednesday, May 22nd and will feature a selection of dresses, skirts, tops and accessories. Sophisticated retailer Ann Taylor has expressed their love for Hudson before, making her the face of their Spring 2012 campaign. “I’m so excited about the capsule collection and working with Ann Taylor”, Hudson said in a press release. “It was such an honor when they asked me to come back for the campaign and to work on a collection inspired by my personal style.”

There are so many questions surrounding Lana Del Rey. As one of the most enigmatic pop stars of this generation, the 27-year-old talent stands as a sphinx in a sea of overexposed bold face names. Taking a break from recording “Young and Beautiful“—her just-released track off The Great Gatsby soundtrack—the Queen of Sadcore escaped from the confines of the L.A. studio she was toiling in to spend a day shooting with FASHION magazine in Malibu’s Zuma Beach area. The breath-taking beachfront spot Del Rey handpicked for the cover seemed to transport the crew into her dreamy world of ‘50s pinups and MGM icons, evoking the essence of Lana Del Rey videos off her debut, Born To Die, her latest E.P. Paradise and her new duet, “Summer Wine,” which features her boyfriend Barrie-James O’Neill.

Features Editor, Elio Iannacci had a chance to witness the magic unfold and chat with Del Rey after her epic 10-page photo shoot was done.
