Mineral sunscreens: The new SPF rockstars
Those of us who take pride in protecting our skin from the irreversible damage of UV rays reach for a bottle of sunscreen as instinctually as we would a toothbrush. It doesn’t matter which form: cream, lotion or spray. Fearful of coming out of the sun looking like Donatella Versace, we apply it generously and with vigour, confident that our skin’s health is being preserved. But it turns out there’s more to choosing a sunscreen than simply considering the spf number on the bottle. Green beauty: Let’s get physical (sunblocks)
I’ve been a sunscreen zealot for many years now. It’s even caused familial strife—heated arguments with my mom and brother about the importance of wearing it are not uncommon. But at a Burt’s Bees event over a year ago, a gaggle of beauty editors were sent into a tizzy (myself included) when we were apprised of the issues surrounding chemical sunscreen ingredients (such as oxybenzone). Among the concerns: Some studies suggest they produce free radicals (eek!) and mimic estrogen. Chemical sunscreens have to be absorbed into your skin to work, which means those ingredients are going in as well. I didn’t need to know any more–I was done with them.

Fashion news: Crayon rings, music hearts fashion and a Dolce dress debacle
Issey Miyake speaks out for the first time on his experiences as a child in Hiroshima. “I have tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to put them behind me, preferring to think of things that can be created, not destroyed, and that bring beauty and joy. I gravitated toward the field of clothing design, partly because it is a creative format that is modern and optimistic.” [NYTimes]
Giambattista Valli has signed a licensing deal with Italy’s Mariella Burani Fashion Group. He isn’t saying yet what’s in store, just “I want to be known for all the parts of the wardrobe, not just the cocktail and evening dresses.” [StyleFile]
We eagerly await Tilda Swinton’s appearance in Pringle of Scotland’s Spring 2010 ads. [The Cut]

Not sure we can describe this Lindsay Lohan ad for Fornarina adequately. Really. It’s…*sigh*, we give up. [YouTube, via Jezebel]
Okay, but this would have been good: The Powder & The Glory details the years-long bitter rivalry between beauty giants Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden. Try to catch it next time it’s on PBS. [PBS, via WSJ]
