Target to collaborate with Toronto Fashion Incubator
American retailer Target has made its aim clear; it’s poised for a Canadian fashion industry takeover.
The bullseye brand announced today that it is partnering with the Toronto Fashion Incubator for the annual TFI New Labels Fashion Design competition next year. For the first time ever, the winning designer will have the chance to create an exclusive collection to be sold in Canadian Target stores, in addition to the cash prize given yearly by Suzanne Rogers.
With many of its Canadian outposts getting ready and set to open as early as Spring 2013, Target has been hot on the heels of Canadian glitterati recently. Last winter, the brand created a shopping frenzy when a Jason Wu x Target pop-up was opened for one day on Toronto’s King Street West. Its infamous red and white symbol has also been spotted around the city during World MasterCard Fashion Week and the Toronto International Film Festival, so it’s clear that the brand is committed to immersing itself into Canadian culture and fashion.
The winning designer will join the high ranks of Rodarte, Missoni and Jean Paul Gaultier among others who have created collections for Target, which is in a word: major. After competing in a series of four Project Runway-style design challenges, the winner will then be announced at the TFI New Labels Gala in April 2013, just in time for the brand new stores to open.
