Happy National Superhero Day, everyone!
Practically every other actor wants in on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe train. Gal Gadot will reprise her role as Diana Prince in Wonder Woman this June, Academy Award winners Lupita Nyong’o and Brie Larson will star in Black Panther and Captain Marvel, respectively, and Cate Blanchett will be playing villain Hela in Thor: Ragnarok, alongside Mark Ruffalo and Chris Hemsworth. Hell, even Sigourney Weaver (Ellen Ripley!) wanted in on the fun, and is playing the villain in Netflix’s upcoming Defenders series.
A-List roster aside, superhero movies aren’t meant to be taken super seriously (Guardians of the Galaxy and Deadpool, anyone?). But what we love most are the costumes, obv.
In honour of these amazing wardrobes, we’ve rounded up the most stylish female superheroes and villains (oh hey, Harley Quinn) in comic book film history. From Michelle Pfeiffer’s iconic catsuit in 1992’s Batman Returns to Jennifer Lawrence’s spiky blue scales as Mystique in X-Men: First Class, check out the badass women that made our list.
Brie Larson as Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers
OK, so we don’t know for sure what Captain Marvel’s wardrobe will look like, but we have no doubts it’ll be lovely.
Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince
Although Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) generated a ton criticism over the major change to Wonder Woman’s signature Star-spangled outfit, the costume department nailed Diana Prince’s off-duty wardrobe. Case in point: Actress Gal Gadot in this sleek number. Also worth noting is that Wonder Woman was the best part of this film.
Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn
Played by Margot Robbie, DC’s Harley Quinn trades in her signature jester suit for shredded baseball tees, satin bombers and fishnet stockings in the upcoming Suicide Squad. P.S. Keep your eyes peeled because according to sources the jester suit appears as an easter egg in the flick.
Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff
Scarlet Witch’s revamped costume in Captain America: Civil War reads sleek, confident and badass, as opposed to her rather juvenile inaugural look in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff
Oh, Natasha Romanoff. This former Soviet spy is the epitome of badass.
Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle
When she wasn’t robbing Gotham’s wealthiest in a leather bodysuit and thigh high boots (as one does), The Dark Knight Rises’ (2012) Selina Kyle—played by Anne Hathaway—could be found donning elegant pencil skirts, tailored jackets and sleek pumps.
Olivia Munn as Psylocke
Our May 2016 cover star Olivia Munn took on the role of antihero in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, clad in skin-tight body suit and thigh high boots.
Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique/Raven
X-Men: First Class‘ Raven (played by Jennifer Lawrence) took to concealing her true self in fur coats, bell bottoms and slinky dresses. And although she slayed in said pieces, we are most fond of the real Raven (mutation and all).
Zoe Saldana as Gamora
For the role of Gamora in 2015’s Guardians of The Galaxy, actress Zoe Saldana sat in a makeup chair for five hours each day in pursuit of the sassy assassin’s signature green hue.
Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman
Michelle Pfeiffer brought the iconic Catwoman to life in this BDSM-esque bodysuit in 1992’s Batman Returns.
Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince
One of the most recognizable costumes of all time, Lynda Carter dons the classic Wonder Woman outfit in the 1975 television series.
Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy
Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy (feathered brows and all) in Batman and Robin was, quite frankly, the only good thing about the 1997 film.
Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones
Played by Krysten Ritter in the Netflix series of the same name, not only is ex-superhero Jessica Jones known for her dry humour and sarcasm, but her worn-in leather moto jackets.
Sophie Turner as Jean Grey
Actress Sophie Turner takes on the role of Jean Grey in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. This installment is set in 1983, so we’re crossing our fingers for some epic fashion moments.
Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter
Hayley Atwell slays as Agent Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Like, can we take a moment to talk about this look? Love.
Halle Berry as Storm/Ororo Munroe
Played by Halle Berry in the X-Men franchise, Storm’s off duty staples included spaghetti strap tops and layered chokers, making ’90s girls around the world swoon.
Emily VanCamp as Agent 13/Sharon Carter
OK, so Agent 13 technically isn’t a superhero but there was no way we weren’t going to give her a shout out—she’s one of the most badass spies out there. We can’t wait to see what she’ll wear in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. We also have lots of love for our former cover girl, Emily VanCamp.
