The 90s Jewellery Trend We Can’t Get Enough Of
Oversized earrings are bigger than ever, literally, thanks to celebs like Kendall Jenner, who are sporting them with everything from denim to dresses. The 21-year-old mega model recently wore a cool courtside look, which included a pair of giant wire-thin hoops, a Dior Addict tee, cuffed jeans and see-thru boots, at a Los Angeles Lakers game with BFF Hailey Baldwin.
But the real ear candy that has everyone buzzing is Jenner’s larger-than-life, crystal-encrusted square version, which she’s worn on several occasions, including the Off-White fall 2017 show during Paris fashion week. Only a majorly cool, tricked-out accessory could steal the show from her head-to-toe fire engine red look from Off-White—and these gigantic Swarovski crystal-studded earrings did just that. The takeaway? It’s hip to be square.
Wondering where you can get a pair to channel your inner Kendall? These 90s-inspired mega hoops are from buzzy New York-based label AREA and retail for $285. Finalists in the 2016 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, the label’s designers Beckett Fogg and Piotrek Panszczyk specialize in textile manipulation (Bella Hadid is a fan), but their huge throwback accessories have social media buzzing. AREA also debuted Lucite accessories (sprinkled with suspended glitter) in its spring 2017 collection. We’ll be watching to see which celeb will be the first to rock the translucent jewellery trend.
Jenner isn’t the only fan of sizeable accessories these days—Rihanna wore the exact same pair of AREA earrings on Paper magazine’s March 2017 cover. Worn with a Dior bra, a Bally colour-blocked fur coat and spiky green-tipped hair, the huge rhinestone squares look right at home hanging from the pop star’s lobes. It makes a girl think twice about what to wear to the corner store, doesn’t it?
Of course, the queen of oversized hoops is Missy Elliot. Known for her hula hoop-sized earrings, which often include an “M” scrawled in cursive, the rapper slays in this statement jewellery, then and now. Grab a pair, and get your XXL on.
