The Culture Club: 6 great airplane reads

If you’re headed on a break to escape the last dregs of winter, here are a few suggestions to keep you entertained on the flight:

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee by Rebecca Miller ($17, HarperCollins) Rebecca Miller’s tale about a suburban trophy wife with a past came to the big screen last fall. The novel is a great quick read for a short haul trip.

Financial Lives of The Poets by Jess Walter ($34, HarperCollins) This one is laugh out loud funny, so be careful who you’re sitting beside as you’ll do just that!

The Devil’s Star by Jo Nesbo ($26, HarperCollins) This dark and thrilling serial killer mystery will keep you on the edge of your tiny seat (and make your hours in the air tick away much more quickly).

The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand ($26, Penguin) A classic about the struggles of a young, forward-thinking architect that is still so relevant today, especially with all the weekend warrior design snobs snatching up each and every Phaidon coffee table book.

A Moveable Feast ($33, Scribner) Scribner released a restored edition of this classic last year. With a foreword by Hemingway’s son Patrick and and an introduction by Seán Hemingway, editor of the project and the younger Hemingway’s son, this is a must-read for anyone who dreams of Paris in the 1920s. The wealth of unpublished material included in this edition is the perfect excuse to re-read the story, for those who have already had the pleasure.

If you’re flying out later on this spring, check out Some Girls: My Life in a Harem by Jillian Lauren ($19, Plume, out April 27), a memoir based on the author’s previous life as one of many mistresses to a prince of Brunei. It’s fast-paced, sexy and incredibly entertaining.
