The Dos and Don’ts of Wearing Hair Accessories
Move over, statement studs; there’s a new kid in town for all things bedazzled. Hair jewellery is back, though this time, (thankfully) we’re ditching the butterfly clips in favour of post-Sabrina the Teen Witch trinkets.
Still unsure of how to adorn your hair in 2017? Check out these tested and true dos and don’ts for pulling off the hair jewellery trend, so you can avoid looking like a character from Miss Congeniality.
Don’t: Overdo It
When it comes to hair jewellery, the old adage rings true: less is more. So before scouring the accessories department of your favourite boutique for bejewelled baubles galore, take stock of your more basic ensembles (think: the LBD you typically play up with statement shoes or a bold lipstick) and hunt for classic pieces to match. Remember: a simple metallic barrette or studded hair pin goes a long way.
Do: Embrace Glam Headbands
If this year’s Oscars red carpet taught us anything, it’s that headbands have made a seriously chic comeback (here’s looking at you, Blair Waldorf). From Janelle Monae’s gilded headpiece to to Selma Hayek’s silver jewels, the eye-catching hair pieces weren’t your average Lululemon sweat-stoppers, serving up both function and modern elegance throughout Hollywood’s iconic evening. Bring the looks home by opting for classic shapes like leaves, circles, and teardrops in silver or gold.
Don’t: Culturally Appropriate
Think twice before reaching for that Maang Tikka lookalike or blinged-out headdress. Coachella may be on the horizon, but culturally appropriating hair pieces should never be on your packing list.
Do: Go for Tasteful Ribbons
No longer reserved for just school girls and Alice in Wonderland, ribbons are the new It girl trend, adored by Sienna Miller, Mandy Moore, and Karlie Kloss – in other words, we’re on board. Be sure to rock a ponytail, messy bun, or loose braid with an edge to avoid the overt doe-eyed look.
Don’t: Don A Blinged-Out Tiara
Unless you’re Gracie Lou Freebush campaigning for world peace or Cady Heron tossing out nuggets of hope at the end of Mean Girls, keep your bedazzled tiara under lock and key – forever. Birthday babes and brides-to-be get a free pass – but for one night only. Tiaras are fit for princesses, queens, and Queen Bey only – no exceptions.
Do: Rock a Pearl Pony
Trust our favourite Dangerous Woman to serve up a new hair trend while belting out some of this season’s hottest tracks on tour. Added bonus: you can easily DIY your own pearled pony piece by dismantling an old set!
