The fashion and beauty products our editors buy over and over (and over) again
by Jacquelyn Francis“Obsession” is a word the fashion flock uses a lot. A lot. Walk into any showroom, fashion preview or story pitch meeting and you’re bound to hear someone off in the distance uttering the following phrase: “I’m obsessed!” Heck, Animotion’s song of the same name, was theme to the groundbreaking Fashion Television (RIP).
Though editors aren’t the only ones whose passing interest in a beauty product or type of clothing spirals out of control, we might have a few more enablers. There’s always a nice publicist who knows you like a certain thing, or an It-girl’s Insta-feed boasting about a client’s product. Not to mention retail look books that let you view an entire line from the comfort of your desk.

Jeans
“I didn’t know I had a denim obsession until very recently. It all seems very logical to me. Denim is versatile, basic and comfortable. While I collect new shapes and washes there’s really no need to discard old favourites. Hey, even rips and worn style have a purposeful place in this collection.”

Coloured denim
“I have no idea how I came to own so many pairs of jeans. And this doesn’t even include the four denim pairs (from light to dark) in my wardrobe. Jeans are probably the only clothing purchase I make without thinking twice. They are comfortable, machine-washable and can even work at the office. Jeans are a fashion no-brainer.”

Deodorants
“I’m focused on greening my personal hygiene and beautify regimen and for whatever reason deodorants became an obsession. Some are more effective than others (my current fave is a home concoction by my sister), and rotating sticks is key when tricking the body out of perspiration. Others are sentimental. Old Spice reminds me of my late father, and Jean-Paul Gaultier is my husband’s. I use his when I forget to pack mine on vacation.”

Hair products
“The quest to find the perfect solution for my curls began six years and meant trying everything from mousse, to gel, to hair creams. Because of the beauty closet at FASHION, my addiction was easy to feed. I would disqualify a product for not giving me the right bounce or texture but never throw it out because the products were brand new. Soon I had an entire drawer dedicated to hair care. My current go-to is Mixed Chicks Leave in Conditioner, which I am incredibly loyal to.”

Ball caps
“In addition to our own personal stashes, my boyfriend and I collect caps from different cities that we’ve visited. The sports ones were purchased after seeing games in LA, San Francisco, NYC, and, of course, Toronto. It is a very forgiving collection—my New England Patriots hat is able to coexist peacefully with his New York Giants (“I like the logo!” he said, in response to my horrified expression). Other nostalgic favorites include the “Blast by Colt 45,” hat we picked up at a Coachella pool party, and the kaleidoscopic Kenzo style acquired in Paris last summer.”

Scarves
“This obsession was passed down from my mom. I can’t even recall when I started collecting them. Since my neck is really sensitive to cold temperatures, they make for the best shield. Whether I’m bundled up in a blanket version or moonlight one as a hairband, scarves never fail to complete an outfit. I probably own 30 that range in a variety of colours, patterns and material. I would also like to point out when I’m obsessed with a certain style, I will go back and buy it in two or three more versions of it. No shame.”

Running Shoes
“Being a health editor means testing out shoes for all kinds of fitness activities. This is what remains after an extensive spring clean—my most recent addition is the New Balance “Vazee,” (bright pink ones). They’re so lightweight. For walking, I wear my Nike “Roshe,” kicks; they’re so cushion-y. And for running, my Brooks “Glycerin 13.” I was having knee pain and when I switched to these I noticed an improvement.”

String bracelets
“I have been obsessed with string bracelets since high school. They are my go-to summer staple, though now I layer a few of my faves with fine jewellery year round. Wearing them reminds me of carefree summer days spent on the Cape and Nantucket.”

Eye shadow
“I used to paint a lot and love the look of all these gorgeous colours in my drawer. I also like black, and clean packaging so naturally I veer towards MAC eye shadow pods; like little paint pots for my inner artist. I feel no shame collecting them. These little guys keep the dream alive.”

Berry-colored lipsticks
“It must have been sometime in my late 20’s–I wore red in high school and brick in university–when I started to collect berry lipsticks. My stash doesn’t include just bullets though; tinted balms and chunky lip crayons are equally qualified. Though the chance to create my own (!) at Bite Beauty’s Lip Lab in Soho—a shade I would willingly wear for the rest of my life–has curbed the compulsion a bit, it doesn’t stop me from feeling there’s always room in the club for one more.”

Mascara
“At any given time I have about four or five mascaras that I alternate between (I do throw them out every few months). I like finding combos that are good for layering. In rotation right now is Nars “Audacious,” Charlotte Tilbury “Fully Fat Lashes,” Lancome “Hypnose,” and “Defincils,” and Stila “Huge.” Charlotte Tilbury and “Defincils,” layer beautifully (Charlotte first for thickening, and Defincils for separating and fanning out). “Audacious” is incredible for lengthening, followed by “Hypnose,” for extra volume on top. Stila’s newest mascara, “Huge,” is the only one I’ve ever used where I always, always think to myself, “Are these lashes NSFW…?” It’s seriously that intense. Then, no matter what I’ve used on top, I follow with “Defincils,” on my bottom lashes. See? There’s a method to the madness. I need all the mascaras I carry around with me.”

Face Moisturizers
“I’m actually great about purging unused items regularly but face creams, oils, serums and anything that can be slathered on my face for the purpose of moisture is my weakness. Just seeing all my tubes and containers of hydrating liquids makes me feel like I might magically escape the inevitable signs of aging. I blame this irrational obsession on Meryl and Goldie for looking so amazing in the movie, Death Becomes Her.
These were given to me after working an event and I can’t bring myself to get rid of them despite having 10 other different types of creams already in my collection.”
