If the Golden Globes on Sunday, with it’s all-black-eveningwear protest, was a call to action after years of systemic misogyny in the entertainment industry then Thursday’s Critics’ Choice Awards felt like a fresh start. A surprising number of women actors walked the red carpet in white, a colour that, in addition to weddings, is often associated with innocence and perfection. Most notably the colour’s connection to suffragettes — in 1908, white as well as green and purple were chosen as the three colours to be worn to unify a protest at London’s Hyde Park — makes us wonder if these dresses sought a deeper connection to the women’s movement.
