The Most Memorable Beauty Looks from the Fall 2017 Couture Shows
Instagram makeup may reign supreme thanks to social media, but we continue to hold a flame for runway beauty. It is, after all, the original source of inspiration for hair and makeup looks, and because it’s far more imaginative and creative, doesn’t leave everyone looking like clones, as The Cut would say.
And when it comes to runway beauty, there’s nothing quite like couture. Besides, what would the crème de la crème of fashion be without equally as striking hair and makeup looks?
Below, see the standout couture beauty looks from the fall 2017 shows. They may not be as easy to recreate as Instagram makeup, but that’s entirely the point.
Chanel
At Chanel fall 2017 couture, everyone was talking about the painterly eye makeup created by Tom Pecheux.
The bold eyes were a nice juxtaposition to the chic, twisted, looped ponytails by Sam McKnight, topped off with Chanel hats.
Maison Margiela
Ultra-highlighted skin by Pat McGrath was key at Maison Margiela’s fall 2017 couture show. But the real standout was the bright red lips, accented with foils and transparent papers for a reflective finish.
The hairstyles by Eugene Souleiman were just as striking, with some models sporting slicked-down ‘dos with metallic finishes and others donning the wet look, accentuated by foam on top of their heads.
Dior
A simple, pretty natural look by Peter Philips at Dior’s fall 2017 couture show. The hero product was Dior’s new Metalizer metal cream shadow for eyes and lips, out fall 2017.
To complement the romantic look, hairstylist Guido Palau created mussed up ponytails with windswept texture using Redken Wind Blown 5 Dry Finish Spray.
Giambattista Valli
The red lip was taken to “lollied” territory by Val Garland with the use of gloss at Giambattista Valli’s fall 2017 couture show.
Given Valli wanted a “poetic” look for the girls, hairstylist James Pecis designed a pulled back, textured style using Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray and Swept Up Volume Powder Spray.
Alexandre Vauthier
Bella Hadid may have worn a veil on the Alexandre Vauthier fall 2017 couture runway, but her killer cheekbones shone through the accessory. Though some models sported heavier eye makeup than others, they all had dewy, glowy skin, heavy contour and glossy pink lips.
Sam McKnight created “disco waves” for many of the models, while others donned slicked back ‘dos.
Elie Saab
Elie Saab took cues from pop culture, citing Game of Thrones as the inspiration for its fall 2017 couture beauty look. Unlike the show’s leading ladies, however, the models sported a more glowy, golden look thanks to makeup artist Tom Pecheux. Hair was made to look very bohemian by Orlando Pita, with brushed-out waves accented by hardware-embellished crowns.
Jean Paul Gaultier
Models were gilded in gold at Jean Paul Gaultier’s fall 2017 couture show, with hairstylist Odile Gilbert applying gold paint to their hair parts.
Makeup-wise, Stéphane Marais wanted a bit more variety, citing “a girl in the cold in a snow storm… mixed with girls coming from Berlin, mixed with girls coming from India” as his inspiration. This meant soft washes of shimmery eyeshadows — some metallic, some frosty — with some girls sporting flecks of gold as accents along with gold pigment down their arms.
Valentino
Pat McGrath reimagined the classic cat eye at Valentino’s fall 2017 couture show by using chalky, white liner on both the inner and outer corners of the eyes.
Guido Palau juxtaposed the graphic liner with wispy, undone ponytails.
