If the abundance of seasonal lattes, unnecessary layers (it’s still relatively warm, people), and a complete lack of humidity-induced hair weren’t enough of a tell, let me make it perfectly clear: fall has arrived, summer is over, and we all feel very alive.
As we should. A new season calls for new beauty trends. But this year, they’re not “new,” per se. They’re just more YOLO than ever. Where we once thought to swap our bright lipstick for plum every fall, and ditch our highlighter for matte foundation, the people we know, love, and trust the most (famous people) are flipping and reversing our tried and true fall beauty rules.
So with that in mind, here are five new rules of fall beauty, according to our friends (celebrities).

1. The old rule: darken your hair
Once upon a time, we told ourselves that hiding any trace of highlights and/or the sun’s presence would swiftly move us into autumn. Nobody knows why.

Thank whatever-higher-power (read: Kardashian) you believe in, Kylie Jenner has proven how wrong we were. You want to lighten up in the fall? You do you. Especially since it makes it that much easier to dye your hair green in the weeks that follow. (If you’re into that sort of thing.)

2. The old rule: swap your bright lipstick for plum
Reserving bright colours for warmer months makes just as much sense as refusing to wear dark tones from May to September, but alas, life lessons aren’t easy, and now we can say we’ve all survived and made it out the other side.

And as Rita Ora proves, a bright lip can still work with neutral makeup if you’d rather keep your fall vibes relatively subdued. But don’t feel limited to pinks: the colours of a decorative gourd (a.k.a. orange) work just as great for the season.

3. Old rule: Ditch the highlighter and opt for a matte foundation
Just because fall offers a reprieve from months of forced dewiness doesn’t mean we necessarily have to embrace it. Nobody’s forcing anyone to commit so wholeheartedly to the mid-nineties aesthetic.

See? You can maintain that summertime glow and still look like you belong in September. I mean, hello: look at this dewy lil angel.

4. Old rule: Go from bright nails to dark
We get it: fall is a very dramatic time that we should by no means take lightly. Which I guess explains the onslaught of berry tones, browns, and blacks we see from Labour Day onward.

But considering how obsessed most of us are with the season, there’s no reason to abandon joy, vibrancy or even fun once the temperatures drop. If Lily Allen can mark the end of summer with nail art, then so can you. (Unless you hate joy.)

5. Earth-toned eyeshadows are a must
It’s safe, it’s neutral, it’s exactly the same shade as November. And it’s fine! It’s great. I live by it. But also, it’s not the only way — we’re allowed to wear (gasp) orange.

But even if bright eye shadow seems daunting, enter: Gigi Hadid, who’s illustrated just how easy it is to don an orange eye. So remember: nobody needs to go HAM with colour, but know that your eyes don’t have to stick to a palette inspired by tree bark.
