The New Reality TV Shows You Won’t Feel Guilty for Binging (Including the Latest Kardashian Project)
Last year, the Kardashian-Jenner clan signed a $150 million joint media contract that included a renewal of Keeping Up with the Kardashians for at least five more seasons. This was shortly after the show celebrated its milestone 10th anniversary. And while 15 years of watching the royal family of reality TV may seem ludicrous—even horrifying—to some, most will continue to happily keep up with the KarJenners, whether by scrutinizing, praising or copying their every move.
We still consume reality TV with a voracious appetite, taking solace in watching others who appear to be even hotter messes than we are. But that’s not to say the genre is totally destructive to our social fabric. OK, the majority of reality TV is, but there are uplifting moments here and there, like seeing the underdog who could never get a recording contract because she didn’t have the “look” win in The Voice and become wildly successful. (Now that just has to happen…)
This spring’s new reality TV shows are a fairly good mix of total trash and “I won’t feel guilty about watching and tweeting about this.” If you need an excuse for your indulgence, try these suggestions:
Glam Masters
Say you love makeup. That is all. Do NOT mention executive producer Kim Kardashian West.
American Idol
Play the nostalgia card. Talk about how you used to watch it with your parents or how Kelly Clarkson’s “A Moment Like This” is the song you danced to with your high-school crush. Everyone loves a good comeback—even if the original run only ended two years ago.
Dancing With the Stars
The upcoming season will feature a cast of athletes, so if you’re a sports fan, you’re golden. If not, think of it as your intro to famous athletes. Or just say you love ballroom dancing.
Genius Junior
Two options here: Say you’re watching it for host Neil Patrick Harris, or say you want to watch intelligent kids thrive and take home that “life-changing prize.”
The Circus: Inside the Biggest Story on Earth
No explanation needed. Real life is one big reality show, remember?
