The Only Thing You Need to Get Hair Like a Victoria’s Secret Angel
Tonight is the night, friends. A billion eyes will be tuned in to the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Whether you’re setting aside some couch time to catch performances by The Weeknd, Bruno Mars or Lady Gaga, or to watch longtime favourites like Joan Smalls and Adriana Lima take to the runway alongside star siblings Gigi Hadid and Bella Hadid, it’s must-watch TV. We had the chance to talk to some of the Angels about their pre-show treatments, and the merits of cryotherapy and coconut oil. And though the makeup looks take a backseat to the glittery getups models wear, the bombshell hair is always a scene stealer. This time around, the beachy waves reminiscent of former Angel Gisele Bündchen came courtesy of a single tool backstage that everyone was talking about: The Beachwaver. “When you think of sexy beach waves, you think of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show,” explains inventor and celebrity hairstylist Sarah Potempa.”
What were your biggest challenges backstage?
“There were 51 models! The biggest challenge was trying to get to so many models before the show started.”
Was there a signature look you created for the show?
“The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is usually known for keeping the hair super long and wavy. This year was all about enhancing each Angel’s natural hair type and length. We went for sexy glam, but with a natural feel. Think second day waves. I used the Beachwaver S1 on all the models.”
How is the Beachwaver different from using a traditional curling wand?
“[If you’re using a regular curling wand to create waves], you would have to go upside down and over, while wrapping your hair around with the other hand. I invented the Beachwaver to get the look of beachy waves in one step: Press the button that automatically rotates the iron with your control.”
What was it like seeing your product everywhere backstage?
“It’s always amazing to see my products anywhere! It’s definitely surreal seeing it backstage at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. [I was also testing out] my new hair dryer that we’re planning to launch soon. Stay tuned!”
Can you pinpoint a moment when beachy hair became a big deal in pop culture?
“I remember around the mid 2000s, Gisele Bündchen was iconic for her amazing beachy waves. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were also huge style influences, who I remember styling around the same time.”
Who are the women you think are most referenced as someone with the best beach waves? “The first people who come to mind are definitely Gisele Bündchen, Lea Michele and Blake Lively.”
