The Rumours are True: Meghan Markle Guest Edited the September Issue of British Vogue
Climate change, LGBTQ+ rights and mental health issues is what’s up next for the September 2019 issue of British Vogue — but the twist? The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, is starring as the magazine’s co-editor.
The issue’s theme, Forces of Change, shines a light on 15 strong women who want a positive change in every direction in society. By gathering women from all different backgrounds and areas of the world, the magazine will highlight “a cast of brilliant female changemakers who are set to re-shape society in radical and positive ways.”
From deciding on what topics to cover, to hand picking the voices that will fill the issue, Markle has taken on all of the traditional responsibilities of a magazine editor since planning for the issue began in January. “Through this lens I hope you’ll feel the strength of the collective in the diverse selection of woman chosen for the cover as well as the team of support I called upon within the issue to help bring this to light,” said Markle.
The selection of women include climate change teen activist Greta Thunberg, Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern, model Christy Turlington, and even former First Lady Michelle Obama. Not only will women who inspire the new royal mother be featured, but her husband Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, will be making an appearance during an interview with Jane Goodall where they discuss single-use plastics, conservation and sustainability.
“What I’d say is that there’s so much opportunity to do good with a platform like that- and I think Meghan can maximize her impact for others, as well as her own happiness, if she’s doing something that resonates with her personally,” Obama said in an interview with CNN.
The Duchess said that even though the months leading up to now have been engrossed in all things Vogue, the project—which involved working closely with editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, and bringing the focus to those who are making a difference in the world—has been rewarding.
The September Issue is set to hit the streets August 2, but if you find that you may be a little too eager to wait the Sussex Royal Family Instagram page has uploaded behind the scenes photos and video clips that have us running to the stands.
