These Might Just Be the Most Punk Dr. Martens Ever Released
Dr. Martens boots – or as they’re better known, Docs – have long been the uniform of angsty, rebellious youth. Since their inception in 1960, the uniform of counterculturally-inclined youths changed significantly, but you can pretty much guarantee that a pair of tight-laced Dr. Martens boots will be planted firmly on their feet.
Initially valued by working-class Brits for their steel-toed durability, the boot’s appeal shifted in the mid-’70s towards disenfranchised punks looking to differentiate themselves from the status quo. Every member of The Clash wore Dr. Martens, and so did Sid Vicious, the Sex Pistols’ volatile bassist. Vicious’ former roommate Viv Albertine of The Slits once told Dazed, “He got me into so many fights, he was the reason I started wearing Dr. Martens.”
Today, Dr. Martens is launching what may be their most ‘punk’ style yet: Sex Pistols-themed Dr. Martens. Yes, you heard that right. The punk band active from 1975-1978 is the inspiration behind a new line of the ball-busting boots; a convergence that seems so natural we’re surprised it hasn’t happened already. (Especially considering Johnny Rotten’s well-documented predilection for filthy lucre.) The five styles, available online now, will definitely supplicate any lingering teen angst.
