This is How Brie Larson Got Ready for the 2017 SAG Awards
As the 2017 SAG Awards kicked off tonight, we hopped on the phone with celebrity makeup artist Rachel Goodwin to talk about Brie Larson’s look, right as the actress stepped onto the red carpet. (We’re all about doing things in real time, you guys.)
Goodwin partnered with Nars and did the makeup for Larson, as well as Emma Stone and Michelle Dockery tonight—so you might say she’s having a busy day.
“To be totally honest, I just saw Brie’s dress very recently,” says Goodwin. “I didn’t have a ton of time to come up with the concept. But I knew from the moment I saw it that it was going to be very easy and elegant. I didn’t want to do anything too dramatic.”
If you’re wondering just how easy and elegant, some of the photos in the team’s mood board included Gwyneth Paltrow and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. “The girl who just shows up and isn’t so serious. It feels a little bit cooler. That’s the vibe,” she says. “I wanted to go with a warm glowing version of that ’90s monochromatic look.”
As for products, Goodwin used Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint (“I love the way it photographs. And I don’t have to layer powder on top”), bronzer to sculpt her cheekbones (important to ngote that the word ‘contour’ was never used), a touch of blush (“It didn’t have too much colour, just a bit of a shimmer to it”), Nars Shimmer Eyeshadow in “Galapagos,” and Nars Satin Lipstick in “Kiss Me Stupid” (“It’s a really gorgeous warm peachy brown”).
“I didn’t want there to be a lot of colour involved. It was about trying to find a level of harmony. Nothing was going to jump out more than the other—eyes, cheeks and lips were all at the same intensity level, all working together.”
As for the Oscars, because we know you’re wondering, Goodwin says she hasn’t thought that far ahead. “I have no clue. I’m still waiting to see the final dress. I’m super excited about it, though,” she says. “Obviously it’s been so fun to do this two years in a row at this level. I’ve always participated and had clients attending, but I’ve never had two consecutive years that have been this incredible.” (Goodwin worked with Brie Larson last year, when she won Best Actress, and is working with Emma Stone, who is nominated for the award this year.)
“It’s kind of surreal. I can’t believe it’s been a year and we’re here again,” she says. “But no, I don’t know [what the Oscars looks will be]. You have to be open to things changing at the last minute. I never get too attached to an idea.”
