This is Why The World Really Needs a Batgirl Movie
The DC universe might just be adding another stand-alone female superhero flick to their growing roster of blockbusters. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joss Whedon is said to be writing, directing and producing Batgirl, and we couldn’t be more on board with this.
In a predominantly-male superhero world (Superman, Batman, Iron Man—you get the idea) this is a huge step for women. And it couldn’t have come at a better time, what with the current political landscape; we need to see more women in film kicking ass! As entertaining as superhero movies are, the stories have become as formulaic as ever, and we’re tired of seeing men do all of the world-saving.
The most notable portrayals of Batgirl can be attributed to Alicia Silverstone (in 1997’s Batman and Robin) and the late Yvonne Craig, who took on the role in the 1967 Batman television series, so we’re curious to see how Whedon will bring her to life. Should the film be confirmed, Batgirl will join the ever-growing list of films and shows with female superheroes at their core. (Think: Supergirl, and the upcoming Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman.)
However, don’t get too excited just yet. The first we’ll hear of any major news probably won’t be until San Diego Comic Con on July 25. Until then, fingers crossed!
