ThredUP’s #fashionfootprint Calculator Highlights Your Consumption Habits

Earlier today on social media, actress and activist Emma Watson announced her #ad partnership with second-hand e-comm site thredUp to launch its Fashion Footprint Calculator.

“Our closets impact the planet and climate more than you might realize,” Watson says in her Instagram post. As an advocate for sustainability in the style world, Watson has long committed to wearing only eco-friendly pieces; this includes her bespoke Emilia Wickstead dress worn for a Beauty and the Beast screening that was made of end-of-the-line fabric, and the custom Calvin Klein ensemble she wore to the 2016 MET Gala.

#ad Our closets impact the planet and climate more than you might realize, which is why I am proud to partner with @thredUP to launch their new Fashion Footprint Calculator (link in bio!) They created an easy to use tool, and I’m so excited to help people discover the carbon impact of their wardrobes, and steps you can take to lighten your fashion footprint. They’ll tell you what your fashion footprint is equivalent to a number of flights, exactly how many pounds of CO2 it produces and how you fare compared to an average consumer. Small changes, such as thrifting instead of buying new, supporting sustainable brands, and air-drying your clothes, can make a HUGE difference. My friends at @GoodOnYou are also included in the directory at the end of the quiz, where you can get more info on the impact of your fashion choices. Also, if you don’t know @thredUP, they are one of my favourite online thrift stores. They make it incredibly easy to find any brand and style secondhand at up to 90% off est. retail, from high street brands to some of my favourite designers. I love their mission to inspire us to think secondhand first and create a more circular fashion future. (P.S. they are just shipping to U.S. and Canada currently, but the Calculator is available to everyone!) Find out your fashion footprint by clicking the link in my bio, or heading to thredup.com/quiz to make a difference for the planet! #fashionfootprint ️??

ThredUP’s 11-question quiz rates your consumption habits from how many pieces you dry clean per year to how many items you buy second-hand. Accompanying each slide of the calculator’s equation is a ‘Did You Know’ factoid that highlights stats about the ecological cost of fashion’s manufacturing and retail sectors.

Your final calculation, which lands you in categories like ‘Green Queen’ or ‘Eco Newbie’, and also determines the number of equivalent flights from San Fransisco to Los Angeles that could be taken in terms of carbon footprint (that’s a nearly 600km trip, FYI) and what you contribute annually in CO2 emissions.

While your footprint might seem scary at first depending on how you shop, use, care for and discard of your garments, thredUP’s approach to eco-education doesn’t divert to doom and gloom. Scroll down on your calculator’s results page to see suggestions for how to clean up your consumption; it provides links to resources from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Circular Economy hub, as well as deals on ethically-minded brands like Patagonia, Reformation and Girlfriend Collective.
