Toronto: Juma’s spring show brings a bit of Africa to T.O.
We stopped by the Spoke Club on Friday evening for the presentation of Juma‘s Spring 2011 collection. Once inside, we were greeted by Juma’s sunset-hued printed scarves–a hint of things to come–hanging from the rafters of the shabby-chic gallery space.
Jamil and Alia Juma, the brother and sister duo behind the label, presented a wearable ready-to-wear collection of African-inspired prints (think landscape, tribal and animal imagery) and draped tank dresses, leggings and comfortable loose tops, such as a slouchy silk jersey tee with a blue flamingo print.
“We used to live in Kenya,” says Jamil. “So we were inspired by that region and we took nature and landscapes from those areas and combined them to develop prints and create a tribal theme.”
