Toronto: Lovesick and swooning
Canada’s most anticipated music event, the Virgin Festival took place on Toronto Island over the weekend. Against the backdrop of the city skyline and the scent of lake water was a sea of nodding heads, swaying arms and screaming fans leaping across blankets of mud and grass.
A brief highlight of the weekend included oh-so-trendy MGMT spreading electro beats in neon spandex and bright orange guitars—the experience can only be described as disco-gone-Woodstock. Halifax’s Wintersleep greeted fans with alternative music in muted shirts and cardigans and Bloc Party started up in a rush of hype. (I also had a reunion with my inner grade school self as I lip-synched to Moby and Oasis.)
Among thousands of I sneaked a few snap shots of several stylish folks that I brushed shoulders with. Wearing of a pair of mismatched Converse with hand-done illustrations, one woman (shown) and her counterpart strolled in outfits that color coordinated with the island’s locker stalls. Aloof and sitting by a tree was a girl in black Ray-Bans and black shirt with a lace Victorian collar. While some fans lashed with angst and jiving energy, others wore gazes of fading youth. Then there is little me people watching. The silhouettes of heads bobbing between blinking stage lights formed poetic captions of youth. I left the island lovesick and swooning, thinking this must be what Hedi Slimane persists on preserving with his work: the nostalgia and romanticized passing of youth.
