Toronto’s New Mary Be Kitchen Was Made for Millennials
I’m a really good millennial: I own multiple terrariums, I eat avocado toast three times a week and I definitely will never be able to afford a house. And so, I feel confident in calling out Toronto’s new healthy-eats outpost, Mary Be Kitchen, as the next go-to spot for Toronto’s Gen Y foodies.
Located at Yonge and St. Clair, Mary Be Kitchen is like a trendy vegan restaurant for non-vegans. The menu is centered around a seasonally-rotating list of vegetable and grain-based dishes and grilled proteins, from which guests can build a customized, satisfying, wholesome meal. It’s the kind of well-balanced meal we’d all cook at home (if, you know, we only had the time, skills and resources needed to do so).
The food menu is complemented by a selection of drinks on tap: local wine, beer, organic kombucha, and housemade agua fresca and lemonade. There’s also a high-brow, sophisticated café program — in partnership with Pilot Coffee Roasters and Genuine Tea — which is perfect for the freelance creative types looking for a place to plug in their laptop, or have a quick meeting over a cortado and a freshly-baked banana-oatmeal muffin.
“We dish out an uncomplicated way to eat and be healthy. Forget about activated charcoal smoothies and probiotic elixirs,” said Mary Be Kitchen co-founder Sarah Huggins, who is known for her award-winning food blog, Kiwi & Bean, in a statement. “At Mary Be we drop the pretension, the diets, the rules, and the gimmicks in favour of approachable healthy food that everyone can enjoy.”
Breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch are available to eat-in or take-out — though, TBH, we don’t know who wouldn’t want to hang around the light-filled, minimal space. You’ll come, you’ll eat, you’ll drink, and you’ll probably never wanted to leave.
