Twenty Years Onward, Princess Diana’s Niece Just Resurrected Her Iconic Wedding Tiara Look
For the first time in 20 years, the historic Spencer Tiara has made a reappearance.
Princess Diana’s niece, Celia McCorquodale, married George Woodhouse in Lincolnshire, England this past Sunday wearing a princess style lace gown, but all eyes were on her sparkling diamond headpiece as she walked down the aisle. The Spencer Tiara, a piece of jewelry that’s become nearly as iconic as the David Emanuel dress Princess Diana wore at her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles, hasn’t been worn publicly since her 1997 death, and was previously only seen on display in museums.
Although the stunning piece hasn’t been used for 20 years, it’s not surprising McCorquodale chose the accessory as part of her bridal look. The family heirloom, which dates back to the 19th century and was gifted to Diana’s grandmother Cynthia Hamilton in 1919, was previously used by Diana’s sisters, Lady Sarah and Lady Jane Spencer, as well as Victoria Lockwood, Diana’s brother Charles first wife, on their respective wedding days.
Many speculated that both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle would choose to honour their late mother-in-law by wearing the crown on their wedding days, but both decided on jewels from the Queen’s collection instead. In 2011, Kate walked down the aisle of Westminster Abbey in the Cartier Halo Tiara, and Meghan Markle wore the Queen Mary Diamond Bandeau for her recent nuptials.
Here, we’ve gathered the photographic timeline of every single time Princess Diana wore the Spencer Tiara.
